Rats, I would had loved to pick up that car. I've had two mid-60s Benz's before and I know how to care for them.

These are really awesome cars. I got to blast around in a lovely 1972 example (fully sorted) and there is no question these are undervalued. They can have ice ice cold air conditioning and that’s a huge plus. I’d pay 9 grand for this example in a split second.

…my very first car was a white 1972 280 SEL 4.5 back in ‘86. I inherited it from my grandfather when I turned 17. A month later he was gone. Then on my 21st my grandmother handed me her1971 280 SE 3,5 Cabriolet also in White. I still have them together with a few more inherited MBZ from my folks.

I think the V8 on this car should be a 6.3Litre engine not 4.5Litre. Did a previous owner convert and put the later W116 4.5Litre engine? Also, the V8 cars had to have the air suspension, but the straight 6 just had coil springs and this was also true with the hydaulic leveler in the rear axle.

My dream car is an old W123/124 diesel or an old BMW E36/39. They really fit the landscape of my country, the Philippines. W123 in rural areas and W124 basically everywhere else. I just think vehicles here in general suck excluding Toyota Land Cruisers. People here just like to rice their shitboxes and turn their SUVs and pickups into monster trucks. What is wrong with car owners in this country?

These got popular in the 2000s like every other 70s car they exploded in value going from 3k to 20k back then. Back in 1999 I had a W108 1971 3.5L v8 for $5000. Looking at classifieds now they're 40k for the 3.5, more for a 4.5 and you probably won't even find them in good condition. Plenty of 2.8L 6cyl for 20-30K. These aren't a secret bargain in Australia. E: I fed my "cheap German" fetish buying a $2k BMW E34 so I guess we have different values for "cheap". Cheap and classic is fluid. 70s cars became expensive 25+ years ago, 80s cars 15+ years ago, 90s cars back up on price recently.

Some would say that this was the last era of MB cars being of genuinely superior quality, if they have experienced a somewhat newer Benz they'd be terrified of the potentially daunting costs of operation. But these babies are, if maintained, pretty indestructible. I think a problem with this particular model is that is virtually indistinguishable from cheaper models, many of which stopped being desirable years ago, mostly due to folks just driving them literally to death...

I had a '68 250SE with a 2.5 six and a 4 speed manual for over 24 years. The car was mechanically fuel injected and had the very rare, optional skid plates and limited slip diff. Completely original interior. I took great care of that car, even going as far as putting a 3,27 ring and pinion in, replacing the 4,06, to make it more drivable. I was heart broken to find that the driver's side frame rail had rotted from the inside. Sold it to a guy, fully disclosing the issues, for less than half of what Hoovie paid for this car.

Important consideration on the 'nobody': For a used/classic, private purchase, the buyer needs 1) cash to buy and 2) cash to run and 3) cash to maintain. This isn't an approved used Merc, or Audi, buyable from the dealer, with a low, low monthly payment... or a new BMW or even Lambo or Kia, with a low, low monthly payment. These cars' sellers need people to buy who have real, actual cash currency, or a willingness to take out a personal loan. The people with money either have (see comments here) a couple of thousand, or have hundreds of thousands, and are hiring Wayne Carini, not browsing Auto Tempest. It's a small, small market for these types of 'intermediate' cars, in reality.

I always loved the style of the over-under headlights. Back in' 73, our German neighbor was an engineer working for Mercedes Benz USA. He had a brand new one. His wife would always be slinging gravel from the driveway whenever she drove it.

As a very little boy in the late 70s in the USA,I remember seeing some of these and they immediately caught my eye, along with the Caddies and Lincolns of that era. Most other kids went for Smokey and the Bandit’s Trans Am,The General Lee,Magnum PI’s Ferrari, etc. Not me! The love affair still continues!

I don't know why Americans don't buy them. When I was little, I'm from Romania, a lot of these were abandoned, rusted, good for nothing, just dead on the side of the road. Never seen a good example. When I was seeing one of these, it was a rusted old junk and even if it was working, the engine was loud, didn't sound right. My teacher from school had one. I used to hear his engine when he parked in the school's parking lot. I love the car, it's very well built. Unfortunately, for some reason, there were many bad examples of these on the streets, it has earned an image of an old rusted car. People don't buy them anymore. And it wasn't one of the special mercedes models, that cost a lot of money even today. I would buy one but there are not many left and where on Earth would you get parts from?

In Germany a good Mercedes W108/W109 of this type would coust you at least 20,000 EUR / 24,000 USD. Here it is a VERY appreciated classic and in my opinion the most beautiful large Merc (S class) ever built. This one in a slightly nicer color, in European spec with a 3.5l V8, automatic transmission, air conditioning, power windows and a sunroof plus a manual transmission pagoda 280 SL in my garage and I would be quite happy.

Why it is so cheap....: Complicated rear suspension with hydraulic leveler. That most of the time has worn out. 13 greasepoints to be greased every 3000mls. Corrosion, Corrosion, Corrosion, did i mention Corrosion already? Manually to be adjusted contactpoints every 3000mls. Crappy power window guidance. Crumbled interior materials. Etc, etc, etc. I spend 20k before it ran as a dream.
